Helping our brain age well
When it comes to the brain my mentor on the topic of reversing cognitive decline would have to be Dr Dale Bredesen.
His work inspires me to learn more about this topic. It is great for all people to get the most out of their brain. The younger you start the better - learn about what affects your brain and how to improve things from every direction. I am proud to be trained in precode(prevention of cognitive decline) and recode( reversing cognitive decline) under Dr. Bredesen.
I have Epilepsy and was inspired to be a Naturopath due to this condition. I love seeing people with Epilepsy. My person aim is to manage my brain so I can be seizure free and help my brain recover from the seizures I have previously had. This has lead me to also consult with people with or aiming to prevent dementia or alzhemirs.
There are so many influences on the health of the brain. Initially it is like playing detective, collecting all the information and test results to get a full and clear picture of anything affecting the way your brain functions. As Dr. Bredesen says and how I like to put it is that the brain is like a roof and the issues I am looking for are the holes that are letting the roof down.
Did you know 15 percent of all people have dementia/alzhemirs. Like other chronic conditions one drug is not the answer for it is a multitude of things contributing to this type of condition. It is not a condition you wait to happen. In moving forward into the 21st century dementia needs to be looked at differently. Get involved, ask the questions, learn about your brain and don't wait. Don't assume you will end up in a nursing home with dementia, don't assume you will die destitute. Be as proactive about your own brain, think reversal and think optimistically.
Did you know there are different types of dementia.
Type ONE - Inflammation dementia - inflammation
Type 1.5 - Glucotropic dementia - diabetic influence
Type TWO - Atropic dementia
Type THREE - Toxic dementia - toxic influence
Type FOUR - Vascular dementia - circulation to the brain not working optimally
Type FIVE - Traumatic dementia - this could be a condition caused by brain injury or head trauma
We suggest a cognoscopy assessment to work thru to learn more and more about your brain and then use this information to optimise how your brain functions. There are so many contributors that can play a role from past history and trauma to genetics. The more we can learn the more we can help you.
We will discuss your eating, nutrition, supplementation, hormones, brain games, smells, exercise, breathing, sleep patterns which may contribute to your brain health.
Secondly it is important to detoxify anything contributing to your condition and educate you so new detrimental toxins can be avoided. Even some past or present mold exposure may cause toxic responses in the body.
Then discussing inflammation markers with the aim to bring down a persons inflammation is always a positive step.
The more you and your family can get involved the better. For instance at home activities like: stimulating memory games, creativity, art, music playing, music listening, specific computer games/programs, table tennis, badminton, dance, golf, learning languages, crosswords, sudoku, organizing new things, writing journals, gardening, looking after a pet, board games, jigsaws, building models and simply trying new things all can help the brain.
Then the diet - keeping the amount of alcohol, caffeine, sugar and food additives avoided or minimal. Dr Bredesen suggests Ketogenic eating can be amazing for improving the brain functioning and we can guide you on this relative to your individual needs. Diets high in refined carbohydrate are not going to be as optimal for the brain.
Then there are substances like aluminum, mercury, paint fumes, thinners, mould, toxic cleaning agents, illicit drugs, dyes, round up, pesticides, and more. The best thing is to be educated about finding better alternatives and then clearing the toxins from the body with natural remedies. The old saying 'you are halfway there when you are aware of something'. There is no point us helping you detoxify something from your body if there are products still being used or contributing to the problem.
Melanie Humble and I are both trained in genetic wellness and can do the assessment process for this. Knowing your genetics can help all your practitioners guide you in the right way to aid your health. Genetics helps practitioners understand what influences the memory, how you detoxify, why you are sensitive to certain foods, what type of exercise suits you and more.
Maedy is now trained in Moca assessment and can do this for you as a starting point for your memory. It can be good to do every 6-8 months.
As part of the suggested cognoscopy assessment we look at possible pathogens or infections of all kinds - viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic. Some of this is done in conjunction with pathology labs and your GP and or specialists. Things like Lyme, co- infections, shingles, gum disease can all be important things for us to know to help treat to avoid affecting your brain in a negative way.
Sleep apnea, breathing, snoring and oxygen levels are also important parts of the jigsaw puzzle of the brain. Is your brain getting the oxygen and blood flow needed?
Lastly chronic stress can play a role in memory and therefor stress management is important in your journey to better brain function.
Our brain is simply an amazing organ. Please look after the health of your brain.
